Nova Scotia recorded 73 confirmed or probable synthetic drug toxicity deaths in 2023, declining slightly to approximately 68–69 in 2024 — a modest 6.8% decrease, in line with a national 17% decline that year. As of June 1, 2025, 20 deaths had already been recorded provincially in 2025, with the full-year trajectory still unfolding. A peer-reviewed study highlighted in CBC News found that illicit synthetic drugs drove a post-pandemic surge in fatal health emergencys in Nova Scotia after an early pandemic dip. The province continues to record proportionally more pharmaceutical-related fatalities than most other provinces. Nova Scotia's Substance Use and Health Emergency Framework guides the provincial response, and the government has expanded community health services including community health services and medical treatment treatment (OAT) access.
